The rack is a type of bar-shaped part that matches with gears and can be considered as a segment of a gear's edge with an infinite diameter.

Main Features

The tooth profile is a straight line: all points on the tooth profile have the same pressure angle, which is equal to the inclination angle of the tooth profile, known as the tooth shape angle, with a standard value of 20°.

Equal pitch and module: any straight line parallel to the tooth top line has the same pitch and module.

There is a clear pitch line: a straight line parallel to the tooth top line with a tooth thickness equal to the groove width is called the pitch line (midline), which serves as the reference line for calculating the rack size.

Main Classification

Straight rack: The tooth line is parallel to the length direction of the rack, making manufacturing and installation relatively simple. It is commonly used in linear motion transmission systems with low precision requirements and small loads, such as simple lifting devices and small conveyor systems.

Helical rack: The tooth line forms a certain angle with the length direction of the rack, providing good meshing performance, smooth transmission, and strong load capacity. However, manufacturing and installation are more difficult, and it is often used in high-speed, heavy-load linear motion transmission applications, such as large CNC machine tools and material handling mechanisms in automated production lines.

Processing Methods

Gear hobbing: Processed using a gear hobbing cutter according to the generating method. The hobbing cutter is equivalent to a helical gear with a very large helical angle. During hobbing, in addition to the rotation of the hobbing cutter and the generating motion with the workpiece, there is also a feed motion along the workpiece's axis. It can process straight, helical, and modified tooth shape cylindrical gears with high precision and productivity.

Key seating: Processed using a key seating cutter according to the generating or shaping method. The key seating cutter is like a gear with cutting edges. During key seating, the cutter performs an up-and-down reciprocating cutting motion, along with radial feed motion and letting the cutter move. The precision of key seating is also relatively high.
